Overview

Aeon - back to the music is a mobile music application that gives the user the ability to "travel back in time" and discover a different style of music from other countries that he doesn't know existed. The user has the power to decide where he want to be and when, by a simple "time machine".

Let's Get Started

The app’s main screen offers an immersive “time travel” experience, allowing users to explore popular music from their selected time period. Genres are visually represented as circles, with their size indicating the volume of music available. Tapping a circle reveals songs within that genre, which users can add to playlists, create new collections, and share with others.

While listening, users can dive into rich details about albums and songs, such as production notes, recording locations, and tracklists. The main screen also highlights curated content, including editor’s picks, user-curated playlists, and recently added songs. With intuitive navigation, users can effortlessly update their library, search for new tracks, and discover more music from the era they’re exploring.

The Problem:

The Problem

  • Overwhelming amount of content and the difficulty in discovering music from specific time periods.

  • Often suggest similar songs or artists repeatedly, which can lead to stagnation in the music discovery process.

The Solution:

The Solution

  • Aeon is a music app with "time travel" feature within the app, allowing users to easily explore music from specific time periods or cultural eras.

  • The app can use a smart algorithm to help users discover new music by recommending songs from less popular artists, hidden genres, or specific historical periods that match their interests.

The Research

At the outset of my research, I conducted a competitive analysis by examining two similar music applications. This analysis focused on understanding user experiences, identifying key features to retain or improve, and comparing the functionalities offered by these platforms.

To gain deeper insights, I distributed a user questionnaire to 40 individuals across various demographics. The survey included a range of questions designed to uncover pain points and highlight features users value most. The responses helped shape the personas I created, guiding the development of a music app tailored to address users' needs.
Below, I will present some of the questions I asked and the responses I received.

Design Concept

Design Concept

I started the design of the app by conducting thorough competitor research, analyzing popular music platforms like Spotify and Apple Music to understand what works well and what doesn’t. Based on these insights, I decided to use dark mode, which not only gives the app a more innovative and sleek look but also enhances usability, especially in low-light environments. The color palette is carefully chosen to complement dark mode, offering a retro yet modern aesthetic that resonates with different time periods. This design approach aims to evoke a sense of nostalgia while maintaining a fresh, cutting-edge feel.

I began designing the app with in-depth competitor research, analyzing platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Opting for dark mode, I created a sleek, modern aesthetic that enhances usability in low-light settings. The retro-modern color palette evokes nostalgia while staying fresh and innovative.

Branding & Graphic Identity

Branding & Graphic Identity

The design decisions for the app’s colors and typography were carefully informed by research. The color palette seamlessly integrates with Dark Mode, ensuring a modern, timeless look that remains relevant. For typography, I selected two fonts that complement each other perfectly, after testing various combinations to achieve the ideal balance. The logo, a blend of typography and abstract elements with no specific meaning, is consistently incorporated across all screens, creating a cohesive visual identity throughout the app.
